Short term rental in Tenerife: new rules of the game

In late April, the Canary Islands Supreme Court (TSJC) made a number of important decisions regarding Decree 113/2015 governing the rental market. In particular, he (TSJC) lifted the ban on the short-term delivery of private housing to guests of the archipelago in tourist areas. In addition, now it is not necessary to rent the entire apartment, it can be limited to just one room. These and other changes are designed to restore free competition in this industry and support that part of the population for which renting out housing is the only source of livelihood.
Restrictions on the rental of tourist housing were approved and enforced by former Canarian President Paulino Riviero, prompting from the outset a huge stream of criticism and accusations of indulging major market players such as hotel complexes. The most active opponents of the Decree 113/2015 are the Spanish Federation of Tourist Lease Associations (Fevitur) and the National Market and Competition Commission (CNMC). Finally, as we see, their struggle has borne fruit and many participants in the rental market hope for an early resolution of the most “painful” issues.
